Familiar words penned by Randy Newman and sung by Joe Cocker in those famous gravel tones but............put into practice by Miranda Green.

Behind the Monkey will be hosting a morning tea opening for Miranda on
Saturday 9th October between 10.30am-12.30pm and all are welcome.

A self taught local West Australian Milliner who produces original designs of truly authentic headwear, Miranda Green is driven by the need to create for its own sake & motivated by the desire to produce items of beauty & integrity. Miranda’s work is highly sought after in Europe and America and she has worked tirelessly on her art form and integrating it into all areas of her life.

After the publishing in 2006 of her own book “A Milliner’s Tale”, Miranda has recently been approached by a Japanese publisher based in Tokyo. Presenting as a 20th Anniversary edition to celebrate the art of Millinery he invited Miranda to be a guest artist in the publication in recognition of her world standard work. Available in Japan and throughout the world the book “Hats in Japan” has been added to Japanese libraries for the contribution it has made in documenting this fine craft.

Miranda Green’s practice reaches in multifaceted ways outwards and far past the art of hat making with even the photography used in her book being an extension of her work and integrating emotionally with the creation it displays. Importantly too, she explains that she strives to be original in design as well as ethical in all her work practices.

“As a business person of the 3rd millennium I have a responsibility to the wider community to act in the interests of all”

And she has, this textile artist is exploring the medium of expression both joyfully and with an inquiring heart by completing the first stage of The Lionheart Project Charity as a receptacle for her works.

The aim is to teach her contemporary millinery craft to Tibetan Refugee’s in India and then to on sell these items into Western markets to fund ongoing ethical workshops in the developing world.

Miranda Green is putting her vision into motion and it is planned that all future designs will be produced through The Lionheart Project. However Behind the Monkey is delighted to showcase a full body of work hand constructed by Miranda herself predominantly in stitched construction and flat pattern design methods. Her magnificent haute couture millinery, with its sculptured shapes, delicious colour combinations, exotic beading and beautifully textured flowers and leaves, will be on show in a stunning window exhibition at the store opening on Saturday 9th October through to Sunday 17th October.

These beautiful hats are fragments of heaven and delicately stitched Objects D’Art and are not to be missed as they will be available to purchase.

‘Dust’ visits the iconography of ancient Egypt and the evolving aesthetic, mood and music
of pop deity David Bowie. Inspirations are derived directly from the icon –
an image of a young Bowie dressed as a Sphinx in 1969 by photographer Brian Ward,
the fabled story of how the colour of one eye was changed when he was hit in the eye by a hand
with a heavy ring, his alleged fascination with Egyptology, aspects of the film ‘Labyrinth’,
and lyrics from the song ‘Rebel, Rebel’.
The occult symbolism of eye motifs, hieroglyphics, pyramids and crystal balls transcend and
unexpectedly combine with the candid nature of pop.

Two short films featuring Bambi Northwood-Blyth and directed by
Fiona McGee encapsulate the mood and spirit of the collection.

And to boot he was selected out of 100+ installations as the INSTALLATION AWARD at this year’s ART in BLOOM 2010 and...........there’s more! A shortlist for the SOYA awards for the Industrial and Object design category.

Andrew Hayim de Vries recent window exhibition at the store was certainly one that stopped those passing by!

“A story into the continuum”

Rhythmic, exquisitely balanced assemblage sculptures of glass and mixed media sculptures that in the past, in their journey were embraced, loved and treasured. Being part of a person, a household, a culture, a tradition they were embraced in a union of one or the other, in time, in need , in celebration.

Then in part, discarded, damaged, rejected, lost and forgotten. Rescued, united, ‘housed’, contained and re-united back into ‘the living space’ with acceptance, of joy, beauty and ‘maybe’ love.

It’s the material. It’s the subject..........of being.

This exhibition at Behind the Monkey was also the prototype and first of the concept Andrew created -

“Onedashfour” = Art in Shop Front Windows 2010

The project will see a range of local artists participate in individual week-long window exhibitions to be launched each month.
Watch for these exhibitions to be held in various shop front windows across Perth.

Humanity's Team Update.........

Further to our post back in April about Humanity's Team Oneness Day Petition to the United Nations, here's a little update......

We are delighted to report that well over 50,000 names were achieved, which was the original goal.

Members of The Humanities World Wide team presented the petition to the United Nations in New York in May this year. They are looking forward to an annual Oneness Day being celebrated all around the Earth in the not too distant future..............we’ll keep you updated....

One of the Monkey’s favourite jewellers, Willem Heyneker has been a busy artist of late! This beautiful neck piece made from a very old ostrich feather held fast by a shank of gilding metal and sterling silver is just one of Willem’s new collection of tribally inspired adornments. Four feathers were gifted to Willem many years ago by a gypsy friend from the Didicoite tribe in the South of England

Originally the feathers belonged to the Gypsy’s grandmother and now Willem has used them in a new range of designs taking inspiration from the ancient traditions of the tribes of old. Wishing to honour the gift itself and to celebrate the spirit of friendship in which it was given the designs take on a special meaning.

This sculptural exhibition neck piece also features one of the Didicoite feathers and an Emu breastbone dipped and plated with sterling silver and accented with red coral. Sublime!

Willem is also displaying in store the Frame within a Frame series – beautifully hand made framed necklaces made to be worn as a nod to some of the spectacular landscapes of Australian terrain – such as the Bungle Bungles and 80 Mile Beach. When not being worn they are housed in a black frame with velvet surrounds and become a magnificent artpiece for the wall.

But the really really BIG news for Willem – and for WA (he belongs to us!) – is that he has been selected as a finalist in the very prestigious Waterhouse Awards for the stunning Tingles Down My Spine exhibition piece (below) first shown in public by Behind the Monkey last year. It will stand up against national and international entries in the Award finals being held in South Australia on July 16th.

Cabinets of Curiosity - Opening Invitation

Cabinets of curiosity first originated in the 16th century and were used to display objects of puzzlement and awe collected by wealthy travellers and noblemen.

Christine Lovitt's exhibition "Cabinets of Curiosity" revisits this concept and comprises a series of customised wooden cabinets filled with collections of found objects and vintage paper shapes.

Christine is a local artist who has been working in the medium of vintage paper and book sculpture for the past two years. This is her first exhibition.

It’s a garage sale in the back of house. It’s a little bit daggy. But a little bit good.

Tis full to overflowing - some cheap stuff, some cruddy stuff, some rough stuff, some silly stuff, some odd stuff, some amazing stuff, some stock stuff, some display stuff, stuff that needs a new home – a good one or bad one, we don’t care – but it must must go!!!

“So what happened Monkey? Why the SALE?

“I nearly drowned!” Monkey dramatically whined.

“Huh?” Keeper raised eyebrows, here we go........... “Water was swirling around my little furry ankles, torrents of it pouring through the back door, rising like a muddy whirly tsunami..........”

“Yeah – so that happened to half of Perth..........” Keeper was not known as a sympathetic person.

“Right. I know. Which is why I haven’t whinged before........but then it happened again with that last torrential downpour – everything got wet back of house, I’ve had to clean cupboards, get into store rooms, rescue damaged stock, mop, sweep, dry, it’s been like a wet dream............”

“MONKEY! You can’t say things like THAT..” Keeper was a little bit shocked.

“Like what?” Monkey thought Keeper was a little bit strange, she got angry at silly things.

“Well, it was wet, it was mucky, and it was a lot of hard work for a Monkey.......and now look, all these bits and bobs I found in wet cupboards. I pulled them out, dried them off and I DON’T want to put them back............” Tears ran down her furry face.
Tears of tiredness. Tears of frustration. Say Awwwwww for the Monkey.

“Ok, calm down Monkey, have your garage style SALE in the kitchen and lounge room, and make room for all the fabulous new stock you’ve got coming in...........”

“Well” said Monkey a little sarcastically, “That is what I’m doing Keeper..........”

“But even your display materials Monkey, are you sure.............like the fabulous black wood angel?”

“Yep Keeper, she gotta fly outa here............”.

And so it was to be. A quirky strange sort of garage style SALE to Adorn Someone Else’s Life!

Alister Yiap - Designer with many layers.

There are many layers to Perth based jewellery designer Alister Yiap; designing jewellery at all different levels from Runway, Commercial to Gallery pieces. Yiap’s latest range titled Lamina uses technology advancement in design, which brings raw product design to consumers direct. With the help of computer aided design (CAD) to print his latest collection in 3D!

Yiap explains "There are specific properties with Jewellery design which unfortunately cannot be hand fabricated. This new process in design has allowed me to explore designs which would be near impossible to make by hand"

This manufacturing technology; commonly known as rapid prototyping takes virtual designs from CAD and transforms them into thin successive layers until the model is complete; where the virtual model and the physical model are identical.
"I’ve had these designs in my visual diary since my University days, I just had no direct access to the technology… until now!"

Manufactured in The Netherlands, the Lamina range comes in two base materials; Bronze infused Stainless Steel and Acrylic photopolymer in colours; Opal White and Charcoal Black. With the additional use of Sterling Silver components and Stainless Steel chain to complement, the range starts from $30 - $150 AUD.

An exhibition by Julian Tennant as part of the FotoFreo Fringe Festival

Julian Tennant is a photographer and artist based in Perth, Western Australia. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions within Australia as well as in Europe and South East Asia. J

Julian is a member of the professional photographers association, the Australian Commercial + Media Photographers (ACMP) and is represented in Thailand/South East Asia by the Pikture Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand. When not engaged in his professional practice, Julian works as a contract lecturer within the Photography and Media departments at Central TAFE.

In 1958, Graham Greene published his classic comedy, "Our Man in Havana", which told the story of Mr Wormwald, a vacuum cleaner salesman in a city of powercuts and intrigue. Half a century later and the US imposed embargo has left Cuba caught in a physical timewarp where things look much as they did in Wormwald's day.

Using Greene's novel as his guidebook Julian travelled through Cuba, drinking beer (Tropical Cerveza is Cuba's oldest beer, first brewed in 1891), playing dominoes under crumbling facades with Cubans who could speak no English nor him Spanish, as vintage gas guzzlers chugged past and impossibly gorgeous women shimmied through salsa tunes coming from inside. And along the way Julian took pictures… photographs that show a Cuba of the early 21^st century, but a physical space that could easily be mistaken for the world of Mr Wormwald and Batista's henchman, Captain Segura.

"Cerveza Tropical: Caught in a Cuban Timewarp" is part of a larger photographic body of work that follows in the footsteps of the protagonists of classic literary works. A limited edition "Cerveza Tropical" Artist’s book will be released to coincide with the exhibition.

Exhibition runs from 2nd April to 18th April in the Cracked Gallery.

Broken Doll

An exhibition by Veronica Mauri as part of the FotoFreo Fringe Festival displayed intriguingly on ostrich eggs by way of Polaroid lifts.
A digital image was printed onto fine art paper, and then shot with a large format camera loaded with Type 59 film.

The image was then separated from its backing by submerging in boiling water and placed on the eggs very carefully to avoid tearing. As the film is no longer in production, the eggs themselves are highly collectable and are editions of one only.

Displayed as a Window installation at the Behind the Monkey store, the Broken Doll exhibition coincides with Easter. The opening night of Seng Mah’s wonderful exhibition ”Sons of Ganga” was a great success with a bighearted crowd raising over $600 as they participated in a silent auction of selected work generously donated by Seng for the "Our Home Charity" in Kerala India.

Our Home Charity provides homes for abandoned children and orphans.

The Ganges at Varanasi is so heavily polluted that its waters are septic. Undeterred by this, the people of Varanasi continue to bathe in the Ganges and to use her banks and her ghats when praying. Strangely, Ganges water is mysteriously rich in dissolved oxygen – a remarkable phenomenon given its pollution.

Mah responds on a quietly instinctive level to this confusing and complex kaleidoscope of the spiritual and the unsanitary. View “Sons of Ganga” until the 31^st March and enter with Mah the spaces usually occupied only by the people of Varanasi.

Mah is a WA based freelance photographer. His previous exhibitions include underwater portraits in “Under H20”, the WA surf life saving scene in “Sons of Beaches”, and the solitude of the lone traveller in “Chaos and Drama”. Seng is the coordinator of the FotoFreo 2010 Fringe Festival and also runs workshops in Fremantle.

Exhibition will run at Behind the Monkey until 30th March 2010.

Sons of Ganga chronicles life unfolding on the banks of the Ganges in the city of Varanasi, India.
In late 2008, WA photographer, Seng Mah, spent a period of time in Varanasi while on a journey through northern India. Drawn by the significance of the city for Hindus and visions of Varanasi from images by the likes of Magnum photographer Michael Ackerman, Mah felt a desire to experience Varanasi himself and to document his experiences in a body of work that forms Sons of Ganga.

The Ganges River is the most holy of rivers in India. She is Ganga, the mother goddess, said to flow from the toe of Vishnu, the Provider.
In Varanasi, the ancient city on the banks of the Ganges, the river is an intrinsic part of spiritual life for Hindus - bathing in the Mother allows one to wash away the sins of lifetimes. The dead are cremated on its ghats, their ashes returned to Mother Ganga, their souls released from moksha, the cycle of rebirth.

There are also more pragmatic purposes to the Ganges - its water is used by countless dhobi wallahs who launder on its banks; boatmen ply its surface taking pilgrims and tourists from ghat to ghat, the locals wash, bathe and swim in her, and, ultimately, she becomes the repository for every piece of refuse, sewage and waste that comes from human and animal habitation of the city.

The Ganges at Varanasi is so heavily polluted that its waters are septic. Data collected reveals that there are 1.5 million faecal coliform bacteria per 100ml of water, where the amount for safe bathing should be less than 500. Undeterred by such facts, the people of Varanasi continue to bathe in the Ganges, to devote their prayers to her, and to use her banks and her ghats in prayer. Mysteriously, Ganges water is mysteriously rich in dissolved oxygen - a remarkable phenomenon given its pollution.

In visiting Varanasi, Mah was immediately struck by its contrasts. The images in Sons of Ganga show these contrasts and explore the seamless intersection of what people in the West often deem to be a division between the religious and secular. In Varanasi, this distinction is blurred, often to the confusion and, sometimes, revulsion, of visitors from the West:
“When you stand on the ghats overlooking the Ganges, a tremendous sense of calm and serenity settles upon you,” he says. “Yet, just metres ahead, men and women splash in the turbid waters of the river, seeking to cleanse themselves of physical and spiritual stains. Behind, large cattle low and defecate on the steps, while touts linger within earshot. The air is heavy with the acrid scent of funeral pyres on the cremation ghats. The hubbub of life by the river is suddenly broken by the ringing of bells and chanting as another corpse, swathed in marigold, is borne towards the pyre, where it will be immersed in the Ganges before it is ceremonially immolated before the burned remains are returned to the river.”

Mah found himself responding on a quietly instinctive level to this confusing and complex kaleidoscope of the spiritual and unsanitary. As a visitor and tourist, it was impossible for him to understand the centuries of cultural and religious tradition that normalised life on the banks of the Ganges. Instead, driven by a desire to create his own understanding of life on the Ganges, Mah found himself entering spaces usually occupied by the people of Varanasi:
“I walked the ghats and explored the alleyways of the old city. I sat down, waited and was invited to photograph inside akharas (wrestling arenas/gyms) on the banks of the river. I conversed with a retired banker on an evening stroll by the river, a boatman who lived in a shack on the ghat, children who wanted to be photograph and then asked for baksheesh (donation) in recompense, Shaivites who prayed and bathed in the river and a band of young men who washed in the river, exercised in the akhara before heading out to their work in various IT and business companies in the city.”

Deborah Dickson and Steven Price, collectors of all manner of vintage object d'art and fashion, met whilst doing a Fine Arts degree at Curtin but found a mutual love of custard pies and black lady lamps, so spent the days skipping tutes and sneaking off to op-shops!

They still do the same thing now, except on planes to other parts of the world fossicking for unusual junk and treasures. Deb has been working in the antique scene for years, and managed the iconic Dr Russell’s Emporium in Highgate until they closed last year.

Now this creative pair has newly formed their own inspiring retail venture,

and it pops up for a limited time in

The Cracked Gallery whilst they establish their own bricks & mortar store, due to open early March.

Deborah and Steve love vintage decor and the nostalgic warmth it adds to contemporary interiors, especially the 60’s & 70’s where no matter how funky and stylised it became, it still remained organic and charming. From the atomic style of the early 60’s, to the wild 70’s bohemia, the Jet-age bringing inter-continental travel to the world and then the world travelling back into the living room. Asian and African inspired prints, bright colours and textures, Pop –Arty post-modernism and crazy kitsch.

Billions, zillions and trillions

Billions, zillions and trillions, the first solo exhibition of self-taught Perth artist Alexandra Lekias, is a romp through a vivid universe populated by doll-like mannequins captured in situations beyond their control and disembodied hands that pull the strings.
Chic but hollow characters are caught in actions that belie their stylish presentation. Streams of sugar gliders burst from pimples, party girls vomit a technicolour variety of whale breeds and hundreds of fainting couches trickle from a bleeding nose.

A strong sense of the ridiculous and bizarre pervades the black and white ink illustrations, which are illuminated with vivid splashes of watercolour in lolly-like hues. Rich in symbolism the works draw on dreams, memories and the artist’s personal narrative to explore themes including childhood and an innocent fascination with bodily functions.

Lekias, who cites 15^th Century Iconic art, German Expressionist cinema, Japanese Manga and the works of Art Nouveau artist Aubrey Beardsley as among the many influences on her work, describes the main theme of Billions, Zillions and Trillions as the expression of a total loss of control.

“The characters I draw have no real will or power of their own, but act as narrative vehicles inhabiting a surreal, dream-like world”.

“They are subject to the normal bodily functions that we don't usually talk about and keep hidden behind the scenes, but with strange but beautiful twists.”

Accompanying the mannequins in this alternate reality is a series of severed hands, elegantly gloved and bejewelled, which have broken free of their bodies to take control. Far more powerful than the doll-like figures, the hands conjure scenes like omnipotent puppeteers.

“The hands are based on a recurring dream I had for a whole year”, explains Lekias.

“When I researched the meaning behind the dreams, severed hands apparently signified a subconscious expression of feeling as if one's life is out of their control”.

More of Lekias’ work can be seen adorning the album covers and promotional pieces for local band Sugar Army. Other side projects of the artist include developing a graphic novel and amassing a collection of 365 party dresses.

Billions, Zillions and Trillions, opens at 6.30pm Wednesday October 7 at Behind the Monkey and continues until Wednesday October 21.

Jeweller Willem Heyneker will unveil his startling new work, Tingles down my spine, on Wednesday July 8 at Behind the Monkey, Highgate

The eye-catching, torso length piece has been painstakingly created from the found skeletal remains of Emu and Kangaroo, which have been silver plated then interspersed with Red Coral and copper wire. Heyneker has threaded the design with neoprene so the piece retains the flexibility of a spine.

“For me, this piece represents both the good and bad experiences that life can throw at you,” says Heyneker.

“Sometimes the experiences are so profound that they create heightened feelings that are manifested physically, and this is what Tingles down my spine is all about .”

Tingles down my spine will open at Behind the Monkey, 479 Beaufort Street Highgate, at 6pm on Wednesday July 8 and close on Sunday July 26. Additional fine jewellery works by Heyneker will also be on display.

Now here is a story for you all.

Once upon a time a young and courageous Genetic Councilor took a trip through the freezing Russian countryside on the Trans-Mongolian railway line. She did a round trip or as the Russians would say “Tuda I Abratna”.
After leaving home to travel on her whimsical way she met Elephant and Pumpkin Stalk Man. Venturing into lands unknown to most Genetic Councilors she found herself in very unfamiliar territory. As she traveled, this lovely 25 year old opened herself up to different possibilities and ways of living, crossing paths with characters that you would never normally meet.

The Councilor, the Elephant, The Pumpkin Stalk Man and others she met along the way were bombarded with new experiences – some seemed terrifying encounters, some invigorating. Such diverse fantastical fun! Sheer adventure.

So what does One do once One experiences suchness? Well the Monkey asked this question.

Well One comes home. Of course One cannot stay in Mongolia too long. But One cannot come home alone. So One brings home the Pumpkin Stalk Man, the Elephant…….as One does. And then she introduces them to the Monkey.

Genetic Councilors may very well be quite strange and wonderfully weird characters themselves. This one is normal to look at, sweet natured, and somewhat but possibly unusually artistically advanced. She can create fanciful narrative and illustration as well as understand complex medical information as well as combine scientific knowledge with counseling. As One does. Or that One anyway……..

Well the Monkey loves the Pumpkin Stalk Man. Like really loves him. He is visiting for 2 weeks starting on June 17th and you must come meet him too – and the Elephant and the Genetic Councilor.
He’ll be living in our window until June 29th – and you can see illustrations of this strange and wonderful groups travel memories and read the narrative of their adventures in The Cracked Gallery over that time.

Come visit. Then quickly visit your travel agent and book for Mongolia. As One should.

They realise the commitment, challenge and the dedication required to not only survive but to thrive in this industry.

MICHELLE FERRY

Michelle’s personal life had come to a ‘glorious’ standstill. She stood amidst the achievements of her life-goals now reached. However, she felt passionless, stuck and without further purpose.

Michelle’s experiences and drive to buy, build and sell businesses, along side her husband while bringing up a family of three daughters, has been invaluable to the Three LLL’s. Michelle is already a successful published author after writing a beautiful photographic yet practical coffee table book, ‘The Lawn Book.’. This was an extension of one of their businesses at the time with Jim’s Mowing WA as Franchisor. Her book was considered by industry experts as the best and most informative books on lawns. Through her innovative marketing she sold her 1st print run of 5,000 books, though requested, she has not reprinted due to moving on to other ventures.

Michelle’s business experiences include opening a boutique of Australian top designer labels, a commercial food service business and ‘Speakers Corner’, a business where she primarily promoted their data base of national speakers and marrying them to businesses that required a specific speaker.

Her creative side was fed by her love of acting and amateur theatre. With her usual approach to life and innate tenacity she has yet again metamorphosed to another stage. Throughout this journey Michelle learnt and understood the magnificent power that comes with being able to take small steps in her daily life to achieve personal growth.

This was the beginning of her involvement with what would become Three LLL’s Success. For as long as Michelle can remember, she has filled her filing cabinets with stories she has written. The literary art flows in a vision of beautiful yet empowering words. She is able through her writing to take the reader with her on their own journey of small daily actions for powerful results.

It is Michelle’s hands-on life experiences which gives her the privilege to love her life to the utmost while she enthuses those around her.

JANETTE PHILP

Janette understands that life is too short to sit around waiting for something to happen. This is why she has been inspired to travel from Capetown to Casablanca and from Las Vegas to Lisbon while exploring all the niches of the globe.

An achiever and an adventurer, Janette gained her Private Pilots licence at forty and trekked the Kokoda Track at fifty.

Janette, a wife and mother of two daughters and a son, is not afraid to work, rest and play. At the same time she dedicaties her life to inspiring those around her to make their dreams come true with her attitude “There are only two times in life, Now and Too Late.”

Janette’s life experiences are varied;

Business – Owning and managing a variety of small businesses - arming her with skills to understand customer service, promotion and project development.

Achievement - Toastmasters champion in New Zealand - ability to speak and articulate with professionalism, which continues to serve during her monthly coaching meetings, engaging and inspiring her clients to action.

Property Investment - Buying, Renovating, Subdividing and Selling properties.

Personal – Sky Diving, White Water Rafting, Fire Walking on hot coals and bare handed Board Breaking splitting 10mm pine planks.

Janette’s wonderful uplifting ‘go get it’ attitude has been mirrored in her writing of Live Love Laugh.

Through her coaching and mentoring program, Janette was loved for inspiring, motivating and at times doing what ever it took to bring the best out in her clients. Her coaching experiences have helped Three LLL’s develop the ‘take action’ style for Live Love Laugh. Janette pours her heart and soul into supporting others in achieving success in their lives. She believes in people and encourages setting goals and taking action to accomplish.

Janette has been inspired to write, in an effort to impact more people’s lives. Whether she is coaching or writing she comes from a passionate heart which our readers will feel.

Janette’s philosophy is that belief in yourself and others is vital for Living, Loving and Laughing through life.

TERRI GIBBS

Terri was driving her car home from work one afternoon when she decided to end it all and drive into a tree. She put her foot on the accelerator, as a voice in her head said ‘you’re so stupid you won’t even be able to do this right’.

This was a defining moment realising she couldn’t go on living like this.

She became a seminar junky and found out along the way it wasn’t the massive things she tried to introduce into her life it was the seemingly small changes on a day by day basis that made the most profound difference.

Terri has always defined her writing life as the ‘Chapter 2 girl’ having started many projects, stories and books since her early twenties. However together with her husband Steve, she compiled and wrote ‘Memories of Ferguson’ a local history book in 2002.

Terri, mother of two daughters and a son, owned her own Bridal boutique where she learnt much about developing, promoting and marketing products and services. A decade in Retail Floor Management with a strong visual merchandising, promoting and marketing bias has given her invaluable skills for understanding her target market, their needs, wants and desires. Start with knowing the customer; create their need, and designing your outcome with their solution in mind.

Terri has been involved in Wealth Coaching for the past four years, although drawing from her passed experiences she is also a trained NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Master. During this time Terri was involved in writing a chapter in the book ‘Millionaire in Training’ in 2006. Terri has been instrumental in developing coaching programs that she uses today. The client’s weekly tasks have been an ongoing refining process to bring out their potential and empower them to take action. This knowledge has been useful in the development of Live Love Laugh.

Terri finds the public speaking side of her coaching very rewarding. She has enjoyed being a crew team member for Chris Howard particularly on ‘Platform and Presentation Skills Trainings’ of which she is a graduate.

Live Love Laugh is a reflection of her passion for personal development and living an inspired life.

About Priya Cooper

Priya is 32 years old and hails Perth. Born with cerebral palsy, Priya began swimming at a young age for therapy and later realised her potential as a competitor. It was not until 1991, whilst competing at a school carnival, she was approached to represent Western Australia. Priya competed for the first time in the National Wheelchair Games winning a staggering nine gold medals.

With the hours of long, hard training Priya went success to success, winning 3 gold and 2 silver medals, and breaking two world records and three Paralympic records at the Barcelona Paralympics in 1992. This was her first international competition. Priya won the most medals of any Australian athlete at the Games, and as a result was given the honour of carrying the flag for Australia at the closing ceremony. On arriving back in Australia she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her services to sport, and became an Australia Day Ambassador.

Priya then set her sights on the World Swimming Championships in Malta in 1994. Priya competed in five events, won 5 gold medals and set 4 world records as well as captaining the Australian team.

The lead up to the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta saw Priya compete in 1995 in the Pre-Paralympic Swimming trials in Atlanta winning eight gold medals in eight events and setting one world record. These results focused much attention on her for the subsequent Paralympic Games in 1996

At the 10th Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Priya led the charge for Australia winning 5 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal, as well as setting three world records and five Paralympic records. Far exceeding her efforts in Barcelona four years earlier. She was also ed to captain the entire Australian Paralympic team, and once again won the highest number of medals of any Australian athlete.

In 1988 Priya competed in the British National Swimming Championships and won 4 gold medals, a bronze medal, and set a world record.

In 1999 Priya was named Young Australian of the Year for Sport, winning the award over other major sporting stars such as Pat Rafter and Ian Thorpe who were also finalists in the Sports category of this prestigious award.

Priya spent almost two years in Sydney prior to Sydney 2000 Paralympics to concentrate on her training and lifelong goal of winning gold for her country, in her country, at the Sydney 2000 Paralympics. Despite recovering major shoulder surgery, Priya achieved her aim and in October 2000 won a gold medal in the 400m Freestyle and three bronze medals in other events.

Priya has a degree in Health Promotion and Journalism Curtin University of W.A, and is very involved in public speaking. She has addressed major corporate and government conferences and events in Fiji, Sydney, Canberra, Hobart, Gold Coast, Cairns, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth. She is an excellent motivational speaker whose presentation titled 'Success is A Choice' reminds us that any dream, large or small, personal or corporate, can come true with the strength of sheer determination. Her presentation often elicits standing ovations audiences.

TO THE ELSES OF THE RED SHOE WORLD

“Red Shoes, red shoes, red shoes...............” Monkey was a –singing.
“Shurrup Monkey”.  Keeper was such a bore.

“No, Keeper...” Monkey lectured back. “They are a-coming. For to Adorn Thy Wall.”
Keeper frowned the question back.

“There’s an exhibition a-hanging on Wednesday 11th March 6-9pm and then for 2 weeks following. I guess we’ll serve some red cordial for me (the Monkey) and some red something else for the someone elses and I’m going to wear some red shoes so I can look the part....”

“What someone elses...?”

“The elses that we are inviting here.”

“I’m not wearing red shoes, I don’t do dress ups”

“Nor do the elses have to. They just come and look at red shoes and drink red stuff”.

“We doing shoes now?”
“Yep, 70 or more of them – wonderful works of art, embroidered in the finest of detail – everything from a Victorian slipper to a pair of sneakers, the lady artist is a little crazy for red shoes eh???”

“.............a little crazy............”

“.............that too, she talks like me...........”

“hmmmmmm”

“aww Keeper.....they really are divine – art in stitchery – red stitchery of course! Silk, cotton, viscose, a titch of wool – a wee splash of gold, a deftness of needle - straight stitch, cross, running, stem, mosaic, button hole and some stitches she invented herself!”

“Who?”

“Judy Cornuel – the red shoe specialist. She’s a bit of a red person. The pope wears red walking shoes and Judy supposes even Julius Caesar was wearing a pair when assassinated by Brutus and Mark Anthony. They did it because they coveted his red sandals! The colour matched his purple toga – he was a fashionista of the forum!”
“You’re mad – too much coffee on Beaufort Street, Monkey’s must be allergic!”
“No, no, she told me so! Judy says red is a powerful and positive colour and every elses need a pair of red shoes. They desire it. They have to have them. The higher the heel the better – can make one taller – red high heels used to be associated with “ladies of the night”, but now everyelse should have a pair.”

Monkey drops voice to an intriguing whisper.

“Waiting at the ready to be worn, be they court, sandals, flatties, boots or even an old faithful slipper. How daring (emphasis in loud whisper to the word “daring”),  to don a red patent knee high boot and top the outfit with a long leather coat to the edge of the heel................how many have dreamed that scenario?...............”(long pause for effect)..............

”perhaps even worn it like that?................” Monkey’s eyes went a bit misty, voice dropping low;

was Monkey losing the plot?

“Monkey, Monkey, Monkey............do get a grip...........!”

“Well, (indignant tone) if you’re too scared to wear a pair Keeper, you can still have some red shoes – hang them on your wall and get lost in your own story!” Snapping back into regular Monkey mode.

Keeper thought for a moment, she preferred misty....

“Who? What? You’re gabbling Monkey......!” said Keeper.
“Let me finish!” (Monkeys can get quite indignant). Proceeds to drop voice. Becomes almost humanoid......
“The Archduke Maximillian.....” Pauses for effect. Remains silent for further effect....then continues with a teacher’s expression.
“Presented Mary of Burgundy with a diamond and had it made into the most splendid of rings to proclaim his eternal love for her in 1477...”
“Yeah? So?”
“Well....” Sighs like a teacher does in front of an exasperating class....
“...creating with this deed a trend for lovers that indeed in itself would last an eternity....”
Keeper looks, says nothing. Shakes head and quizzically lifts shoulders.
“Well that’s why the Diamond has become a Stone of Eternity.” Still Keeper is silent.
“Well that’s why it’s the most revered and romantic of all the sparkling gems......and SHINES a light into the Lovers hearts......oh........
“.......and that’s why I want to introduce you to Laura......”
Monkey drags Laura in front of Keeper.
“Hi, there Keeper – what Monkey is trying to tell you is that I am a highly experienced Diamond consultant and to celebrate Valentine’s Day I am presenting a beautiful exhibition and sale of loose diamond stones at 6pm Tuesday 10th February . It will be here at Behind the Monkey, featuring the SHINE of Origin Australia (TM) Diamonds – all at industry prices.”
“Fantastic!” Keeper was delighted. “We’ll offer a glass of champagne.....it’s a given to go with diamonds!” Finally she understood the MonkeySpeak.
“Well, they’ll be beautiful Whites, Champagne, Cognac and Yellows guaranteed from the Argyle Mine – and some sourced from world suppliers specialising in loose diamonds.....”
“It will be a special and sparkle arkly evening!” cried Monkey interrupting.....
“Baker&Schundlar are dressing The Cracked Gallery with their beautiful silver dusted baroque furniture, Pollen Nation are supplying a white orchid flower art vase.....clients can do a meander and a wander around the gallery and store and soak up a bit of romance! I might even get MARRIED!”
“No Way! Monkey – I can’t have two of you...”

“Who said I would marry a Monkey......?” Monkey looked sideways at Laura.

“Hmmmmmmmm.....” said Laura – “I’ve got to go – but tell everyone I’m available by appointment for private viewings the week of the 6/2 -13/2 too if they like – I can offer advice on buying, choosing, replacing and setting stones as well as recommending specialists regarding design and custom settings......and I’ll see you, little Monkey on the 10th February!”
“Oh goody,” said Monkey – “a whole WEEK OF DIAMONDS!”

*Monkey bursts into song*

“Hush my lover, don’t say a word
The shop down the road has a mocking bird
And if that mocking bird don’t moan

The Monkey would like to say a big THANK YOU to Yolanda Stapleton for putting together an amazing evening opening to the Super Super Sampler exhibition. There was a wonderful turnout and a very appreciative audience for the exhibition. Congratulations Yolanda and also for having the most fantastic Dad! Ron, worked so hard all night helping everything to run smoothly. “Yeh Ron!!!” (Monkey screams!)

A big congratulations to Lloyd Hughes who won the Best In Show award for his unique approach to using the supersampler camera. Prizes courtesy of exhibition sponsors Fitzgerald Photo Imaging, Pigeonhole and Lomography Australia. Well done Lloyd and indeed to all exhibitors – Flexhaus, Gav Fielding, Nathan Martella, Russell Winter & Yolanda Stapleton. (Monkey claps loudly!).

“Monkey calm down – it does after all happen once a year – a week after every Christmas…..”

Sarcasm filled the air. Didn’t make a bit of difference however to the Monkey.

Questions ignored. Enthusiasm continues. Keeper thinks about the number 9.

“Lotta things happening you know?” Keeper groans at Monkey’s pun as our lovely designer Lotta walks in the door

“How’s my reinvented watch jewellery selling Monkey?”

“Selling lotta of it”……giggles, jumps around the shop. Lotta groans. Monkey ignores. Continues on babbling wildly as Lotta asks what else is happening…………

“In The Cracked Gallery – Super Super Sampler. Yolanda Stapleton from Onetrickpony has assembled a group of local lomographers who have millions (slight exaggeration but it’s over 250) of images shot with the supersampler camera.”

“It should be a jungle.”
“Nah…doesn’t matter….trees is trees….jungle, forest, what’s the difference?”
“The difference dear sweet Keeper…is that jungles have monkeys, forests have woodland fairies, bambis and the like….it should be a jungle!”
“Yeah, but Christmas doesn’t really happen in a jungle”.
“How do you know?”
“I know these things – that’s why I’m the Keeper. And besides I say it’s a forest. A Christmas forest, so that’s how it is.”

Sulks in the air. Sits on keester. Sulks some more.

“Aww come on Monkey” speaking gently now, cajoling almost cooing…. “It looks so beautiful – everything isn’t always about you. Christmas should be about all things….come have a look.”

Takes Monkey’s hand and pulls gently. Persuasively. Monkey reluctantly from underneath brow looks at the window with breath held tight.

“I guess it looks ok”.

Monkey 2 – the creative spark and Monkey 3 – the sparkly Gem smiled. “It’s magic” they whispered to each other.

Monkey explored. There are tiny reindeers on a twig blossomed rainbow dancing in miniature. A golden plum puddin’ tree (yes they really do exist). Travel your eyes across the gold brick wall with precious pebbles on dried lotus and rose pourri embracing gold dusted gems, jewellery and ornaments to Adorn Thyself! A baby bambi with white spots and a magic tree necklace protected by a massive Prancer (Oh Deer!) cross dressed underneath huge masculine antlers with brass chandelier earrings….(well it can happen at Christmas time!)…and the woodland faerie…twigs and blossoms and some sort of Christmas shine with tulle covered wings……

All ready to transport you dear shopper into a wonderland of Christmas!

Passage - A Walking Exhibition

Catch innovative window installations and designs as Curtin University Fashion Merchandising students work with retailers on Beaufort Street as part of a new community project kicked off by the Beaufort Street Network.

The Beaufort Street Network is a new community organisation for people who love the unique vibrancy, lifestyle and retail nature of the strip– and are committed to making it even better.

Working to the theme “Passage: a walking exhibition”, nine groups of Curtin students have been asked to work with retailers to develop innovative window displays – which show both creative flair but also includes the retail store’s particular products.

This is a great initiative which provides a practical and hands on opportunity for students to learn about display merchandising and project management, while also bringing together retailers and developing a sense of community.

The community project will be kicked off at a special evening launch on the Street on Thursday evening, 23rd October at Billie and Rose from 6pm and end at Headturners hairdressers where the winner for best overall window display will be announced at 9:30.

The walking exhibition will run for two weeks until Wednesday 5th of November.

The stores participating in the project include: Planet Video; Libertine; Behind the Monkey; Ruck Rover; Test tube; Headturners; Ware; Baker and Shuhandler; and Billie and Rose.

The Irony Of The Lightbulb Series By Fred Suicide

About the Series

The light bulb – invented by Humphrey Davy (although some say Thomas Edison) has, through mass world consumption, become a recycling issue in itself.
Fred finds he can breathe a new life into light bulbs that have suicided on the rubbish heap using lego men that have suffered long and hard in the playroom……..such a bright idea!

About The Artist

FRED SUICIDE
perth – western australia

(born in Sydney; raised in Lebanon, Fred Suicide left Tripoli to study abroad at the age of 18 and after living in Sweden and California, settled in Perth six years ago.)

Fred has been experimenting with the amazing art form of transforming and sculpturing used and discarded toys after switching career paths from engineering a few years back. He has no formal art training but has adapted the skills learnt over the years while studying engineering to create his artworks.

Fred’s toys reflect Australia’s recycling culture. He has spent hours at the tip, at garage sales and can often be found in an op-shop on the fringes of Perth looking for pieces of Lego and other toys that have been rejected by past owners. THE 2008 STORY - CHAPTER 7 - "CHAOS AND DRAMA''

"Monkey's don't live in Greece" sighed Keeper.
"So". said the Monkey
"Seng Mah tells me that Greece is a place where nothing is as it seems".

“I, THE MONKEY, want to go there - expose myself to an environment which is wonderfully and richly unfamiliar".

Keeper thought to herself that she exposed herself each day to an environment which was also wonderfully and richly unfamiliar - try working in a store with a Monkey!

"Talk about Chaos and Drama" she muttered out loud.

"That's what I'm talking about Keeper - Chaos and Drama - Seng's photographic exhibition and exploration of the rich, chaotic tapestry of Greek life. Photographs that are less about the external landscape of Greece and more about his internal feelings of isolation and loneliness while traveling solo and how he reacted to these travel experiences. Seng has a way of revealing the unexpected in his images and it looks so different............"
